Dissolve GTA: Bista... elections to the GTA should be held immediately
VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, 13 Jun 2019, Darjeeling: BJP MP Raju Bista demanded on Wednesday that the GTA be "dissolved' so that it didn't remain as a "stumbling block", a day after he had reportedly sought elections to the hill body.
Bista had reportedly said in Siliguri on Tuesday that elections to the GTA should be held immediately. The statement was a talking point in the hills with many stating that Bista had not been voted to propel the BJP-GNLF-GJM (Bimal Gurung) to the GTA.
In the election manifesto, the BJP promised to grant tribal status to 11 hill communities and find a "permanent political solution" for the hills.
Addressing the media after a meeting with alliance partners in Darjeeling on Wednesday, the MP said: "Whenever there is an attempt to call a tripartite meeting, the state government maintains the GTA is with it and so does the mandate. Hence, we want the GTA to be dissolved so that it does not come as a stumbling block"Elections to the GTA are not important for us; we want the body to be dissolved. The GTA has become a musical chair with the state first appointing Binay daju (Tamang) and now there is Anit daju (Thapa). The recent elections have shown that they have no mandate," said Bista.
The Darjeeling MP said it had been decided at the meeting of the alliance partners that they would work on a minimum common programme.
"We are committed to the promises we have made in the manifesto," said Bista.
The MP also welcomed the demand by the Morcha's Binay Tamang faction for Gorkhaland and said: "They have probably realised that one cannot go against the wishes of the people. Nevertheless, we welcome their statement and that of Anit Thapa on R.P. Waiba's arrest," said Bista.
Thapa had on Tuesday condemned the arrest of 80year-old Waiba, a leader of the Gurung camp.
Darjeeling MLA Neeraj Zimba said all possibilities, including legal recourse, would be explored on the no-confidence motion against the present Darjeeling municipality board..
