Golay seeks Delhi cash aid

RAJEEV RAVIDAS, TT, 13 Jun 2019, Gangtok: Sikkim chief minister P.S. Golay has sought a one-time financial aid of Rs 4,000 crore from the Centre to bail out the state which is reeling under the debt burden of more than Rs 8,000 crore.

An official release issued here on Wednesday said the chief minister had made the request when he had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday night and explained to him the financial position of the state.

"Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang accordingly proposed for a one-time grant of financial aid of Rs 4000 crore from the Government of India to bail itself out from this financial disarray," said the release.

Golay, the release said, told the prime minister that as on March 31, 2019, the loan of the state government stood at a whopping Rs 8819.10 crore, while its annual budget was around Rs 7000 crore and debt burden more than Rs 8,000 crore.

The state claimed that Modi had assured Golay of help to ease the debt burden. "He (Modi) equally expressed his extreme surprise over such financial low despite the Union having provided huge Golay with Modi in Delhi on Tuesday and uninterrupted budget allocation to the State over the years," said the release. To a request made by the prime minister to account for such misuses by the earlier regimes, Golay, the release said, promised to come out soon with a white paper that would explain the financial status of the state and spell out the ways and means his government was considering to meet the challenge. The chief minister has also raised two major demands before Modi. They are reservation of seats in the Assembly for Limbu and Tamang communities, who were accorded Scheduled Tribe status in 2003, and tribal status for 11 Nepali communities. The release said the prime minister had responded positively to both the demands and promised to work in close coordination with the state government to bring them to fruition..
