Continuous Rain Causes Widespread Flooding and Disruption in Paschim Medinipur

Don't Miss

Baby Chakraborty, Kalimpong, September 16, 2024 — The recent heavy rains have led to severe flooding across multiple districts in Paschim Medinipur, causing widespread disruption and damage. Extensive areas of Debra, Pingla, Sabong, Narayangarh, Keshiari, Dantan, Keshpur, and Ghatal are now submerged, affecting both residential and agricultural areas.

In Sabong Block, approximately 13 areas are experiencing severe waterlogging. The river levels have risen significantly, flooding several low-lying regions. Villages including Akulsanda, Siddheshwari, and Akmura in No. 2 Topa Gram Panchayat of Keshpur Block are under water due to the overflow of the Kubai River. The flooding has also submerged a wooden bridge, cutting off access and disrupting traffic.

Agricultural lands have not been spared, with around 400-500 bighas of farmland inundated by river water. In Ghatala, rivers are flowing above the danger level, leading to knee- to waist-deep water on paved roads. Local residents are now relying on dinghy boats for transportation as fear and uncertainty loom with ominous black clouds overhead.

In Narayangarh Block, the temporary bridge at Makrampur has collapsed, isolating 12 to 13 villages. In Keshiari, areas such as Kulbani, Nachipur, and the Central Bus Stand are flooded, leading to water entering several homes. Local residents are temporarily relocating to schools for shelter. Similarly, Rautrapur and Mahishpur in Dantan are also submerged.

The Kansai River in Debra is flowing above the danger level, impacting paddy and vegetable cultivation in areas like Satyapur and Tabagiya. Residents have been forced to evacuate their dilapidated homes and seek refuge in safer locations. On Monday, Debra's BDO Priyavrata Rari and other officials visited the affected areas to assess the damage.

The Ghatal area has been hit particularly hard, with flooding prevalent across the region. District Magistrate Khurshed Ali Qadri, police officer Dhritman Sarkar, and other high-ranking officials have been actively involved in overseeing relief efforts. A control room has been established by the district administration, and relief centers have been set up across various locations to assist affected residents.

The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts to mitigate the impact of the flooding. Residents are urged to stay informed through local news and official updates as the situation continues to evolve.
