Soon, modified HS syllabus for humanities & commerce
MP | 30 July 2023 : The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has just begun the process of modifying syllabus of humanities and commerce subjects at the HS level. The modified syllabus may be implemented from the next academic year, according to a senior official.
Recently, changes were made in the syllabus of subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology to keep it at par with national boards like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
“These modifications were made to ensure that students studying under the Council stay at par with the national boards,” an official stated.
On a similar tone, the talks of modification have started for other subjects, including humanities and commerce.
According to the official, the syllabus was last modified around 2014 which is quite some time back. Hence, it has been decided that the syllabus will be made at par with other boards. The details on the modification is unclear as of yet as the discussions have just begun.
“It will not be implemented from this academic year, however, it may be implemented from the next academic year,” the official stated.
State Education minister Bratya Basu while speaking with a group of journalists on Saturday had called it a positive step towards tuning the education system with modern technology. He further stated that this will benefit the students from the state.
The Council has been taking new steps to introduce quality education and career-driven subjects, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. These subjects will be introduced from this academic year 2023-2024. Council president Chiranjib Bhattacharjee had earlier said both the subjects are contemporary and will prove beneficial for students who wish to study science or engineering.
Artificial Intelligence is effective in various fields like mobile phones, televisions, smart cars and even for catching fake news, Bhattacharjee reiterated, while adding: “AI application is everywhere. Basic concepts should be introduced.”
To accommodate such inclusions, the Council has also made a provision for training of teachers. The training of the first batch of school teachers for the two new subjects is likely to be held in August.
The first batch will have 60 school teachers. For the teachers’ training, the WBCHSE has taken the help of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of Jadavpur University (JU). According to a senior Council official, the training for the second batch will take place in September.
