State tourism dept to start adventure activities at Gajoldoba
The installation works of various components have already started. This activity is supposed to commence before the winters and Rs 45 lakhs have been sanctioned for this by the state tourism department.
Gajoldoba is situated about 35 kms away from Siliguri. Currently, people can enjoy Shikara rides on River Teesta, where a number of food stalls have come up.
Freshwater fish from River Teesta, especially the Bouroli fish is a delicacy, for which many visit Gajoldoba. Bhorer Alo — dubbed as the largest integrated tourism project — also located in Gajoldoba, is a dream project of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Since its inauguration, the tourism department has been giving a facelift to the entire area. Many development works have been taking place here. It is one of the most prominent tourist spots in the region.
To give a further boost, the department will soon be starting adventure activities there. According to sources, a total of eight recreational adventure sport activities like zip lines, rock climbing, burma bridges, will start at Gajoldoba.
The West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Limited is conducting the work and the installation began almost a month ago.
Debashish Maitra, president of Eastern Himalayan Travel and Tour Operators Association said: “We are thankful to the tourism department for converting Gajoldoba into one of the most popular tourism destinations. This new addition will help in bringing more tourists to the area. We hope people will enjoy the new addition. With more tourists coming in, the local economy will further be rejuvenated.”
Sources further state that there is a plan to construct a watchtower from where the visitors can get a spectacular view of the Teesta Barrage and also watch migratory birds, specially during the winter months.
