Cooch Behar incidents: Police issue ‘fake alert’ on Malviya’s tweets

Shashikesh Roy, EOI, 30 July 2023 :  BJP leader Amit Malviya has been accused of tweeting false information about two separate incidents of Cooch Behar. Howver, the district police has issued a ‘fake alert’ on Malviya’s tweets regarding incidents of rape and suicide attempt in Cooch Behar.
The police have also tweeted a rebuttal on Malviya’s tweets. Amit Malviya had tweeted: “Panchla, Domjur, Malda, Burdwan and now Cooch Behar.
Yesterday, a 14-year-old girl, a resident of Kaljani, Cooch Behar, died after five men of the ruling TMC abducted her on 18th July and raped her mercilessly for 48 hours. She was rushed to a private hospital in an unconscious state but lost the battle of life.
Police and local district president of TMC are threatening the family not to file a complaint against the accused. Mamata Banerjee is silent.”
In another tweet, he had said: “Another Tribal girl was confined, drugged, and raped by her Muslim neighbor in Cooch Behar’s Tufanganj. Again, she is being threatened by members of the ruling party not to file any complaint. The girl had taken ill, but local TMC leaders didn’t allow her to get admitted to a hospital until it became inevitable. She is currently battling for life.”
Sharing details of these two incidents, Sumit Kumar, superintendent of police, Cooch Behar said: “The information presented in these two incidents through the tweet is completely false and misleading.”
The rebuttal by the Cooch Behar police stated: “As per investigation, the principal accused, Bappa Barman, belonged to the same village and was an acquaintance of the family for a long time.
He sexually assaulted the victim girl and then she fainted. Then with the help of four friends, the accused brought the girl to a local doctor, then to the local hospital and then to a nursing home for treatment.
All of the 5 accused have been arrested. None of the accused are active members of any political party.”
The police further stated that the police had helped with the treatment and even arranged for blood. Round the vigil along with a police picket has been put up in the village. There is no information of threat or intimidation.
Regarding the Tufanganj case, the police rebuttal stated: “In her written complaint, the mother of victim girl has stated that her daughter was having a love affair with the accused. They had eloped together on 18.7. 23 and were later brought back home on 22.7.23.
The victim fell under depression and tried to commit suicide. The accused was immediately arrested and a specific case has been started.
The girl is under medical treatment at the MJN Hospital.” Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Partha Pratim Ray said: “Actually, Amit Malviya and BJP leaders are trying to create division among people by presenting wrong information.
The police have taken strict action in these incidents. How can they spread such lies? It is a diversion tactic and also an attempt to cover up the incidents of Manipur?”
Cooch Behar district BJP president Sukumar Roy said: “I am not aware of the matter, so I will not comment on it without knowing.”
