Kunal Ghosh Comments on Position of Rebel MLAs During Budget Session

MP, June 18, 2026, Kolkata: In a significant political development on the opening day of the Budget Session, a group of TMC MLAs loyal to former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, including Kunal Ghosh, Madan Mitra and Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, met Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to discuss a range of issues concerning their role inside the House and matters affecting the state.

After the meeting, Kunal Ghosh described the interaction as positive, saying the discussions primarily focused on Assembly functioning.

According to him, the Chief Minister assured the delegation that their group would be provided a separate room in the Assembly and given adequate opportunities to participate in discussions.

Taking a swipe at the rebel faction within the TMC, Kunal asserted that they would function as a constructive Opposition and would receive independent speaking time in the Assembly, similar to other Opposition parties, instead of relying on the recognised Opposition leadership.

Despite the split in the party, Kunal maintained that the group continued to identify itself as Trinamool Congress legislators.

He also claimed that a large section of MLAs currently aligned with the rebel camp remained emotionally attached to Mamata Banerjee and continued to stay in touch with her loyalists.

According to Kunal, nearly 90-95 per cent of those legislators were not ideologically committed to the rebel camp and several had privately conveyed their discomfort.

He alleged that many were facing political pressure and criticism in their constituencies and questioned why they should remain in a situation where they could not function freely.

Referring to the meeting with the Chief Minister, Kunal appealed to such legislators to reconsider their position and engage in politics with dignity while continuing to work on issues related to governance, law and order, and development.

The delegation also raised concerns over hawker evictions.

Kunal claimed they were assured that no further bulldozer-led eviction drives would be carried out.
