CBI Questions Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh in RG Kar Case Probe
The questioning focused on allegations of a cover-up and the hasty cremation of the victim.
Incidentally, the action comes a day after the CBI’s visit to the crematorium in Panihati, where the PGT doctor’s body was cremated.
It is alleged that the body was taken to the Panihati crematorium without consulting the family after the autopsy, and that Nirmal Ghosh had led the entire process.
He was also present when the body was taken out of the hospital and transported to the crematorium.
After about three hours of interrogation, Nirmal Ghosh left the CBI office.
It may be mentioned that last month, the family of the PGT doctor approached the Sealdah court seeking the arrest of Nirmal Ghosh and two others allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
Prior to that, the Calcutta High Court had ordered the formation of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the CBI Joint Director of the Eastern Zone, to examine allegations of a broader conspiracy and attempts to suppress facts in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.
A division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed the SIT to place its report before the court on June 25.
The bench instructed the CBI to closely scrutinise the chain of events beginning with the victim’s dinner on the night of August 9, 2024, and continuing up to the cremation of her body, while granting the agency the liberty to investigate all connected aspects necessary for an effective probe.
