Permanent political solution holds centre stage in Hills _ HILL POLITICIANS WELCOME GUV’s ADDRESS

Political Dialogue on Darjeeling Hills Issue Remains a Key Focus

Amitava Banerjee, MP, June 18, 2026, Darjeeling: Permanent Political Solution (PPS) continued to occupy the centre stage of hill politics.

Different hill political camps welcomed West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi's mention of this issue during his address in the Assembly on Thursday.

Amidst the highly fluid political environment in the Darjeeling Hills, the spate of resignations continued in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

The list of resignees included Anjul Chauhan, Chairman, and Sabhasad, GTA.

Addressing the West Bengal Assembly budget session, Governor Ravi stated: "My Government is committed to arriving at a permanent political solution to the long-drawn Gorkhaland issue through negotiations with all the stakeholders..."

"We welcome this statement and thank the Chief Minister for placing PPS for our region among the top priorities of the BJP government. We are confident that the people of our Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars will be ensured justice. We are confident that sincere dialogue and cooperation among all sides will help in achieving a peaceful and lasting solution. We appeal to all the stakeholders to support peaceful democratic efforts towards ensuring a better and brighter future of our region," said Raju Bista, Darjeeling MP.

Binoy Tamang, GTA Sabhasad and former GTA chief, said: "This address by the Governor is a major constitutional initiative for the Darjeeling Hills, Terai, Dooars and the Gorkha community. Never before in history has a personality holding such a high constitutional office formally addressed this sensitive issue of the Gorkha community from an official and empowered platform in this manner."

Amidst all this, the spate of resignations continued in the GTA.

On Thursday, GTA Chairman Anjul Chauhan, taking to social media, declared that he had tendered his resignation from the post of Chairman and Sabhasad.

"At present, the BJP is in power both in the Centre and the State. The situation is conducive to fulfilling the commitment made by the BJP for PPS. We are confident that the BJP Government will definitely give justice to the Gorkhas. Under these circumstances, for the better future of the Gorkhas, I have resigned from the post of Chairman and Sabhasad," stated Chauhan.

Others who resigned include Sabhasads C.B. Gurung, Hemant Rai, Satish Pokhrel, Pramaskar Blone, Anos Thapa and Shyam Sherpa.

Pawal Simick, a nominated member, also resigned.

Incidentally, the GTA consists of 45 elected and 5 nominated members.

On Wednesday, GTA chief Anit Thapa, along with Sanchabir Subba, deputy chief executive, and Sabhasad Arun Sigchi, had announced their resignations.

Regarding the fate of the GTA, with the spate of resignations, Bista had stated: "After the Assembly elections, the GTA has turned into a corpse. The new arrangement will now come into place. The Chief Minister will decide on what is to be done in the interim stage."
