Health Worker Receives Transfer Relief Following Public Grievance Hearing

MP, June 15, 2026, Kolkata :  A social worker attached to the state Health Department received relief from what she described as an unethical transfer within less than 12 hours of approaching Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the ‘Janatar Darbar’ public grievance hearing in Salt Lake on Saturday.

The complainant, Rupa Chakraborty, a psychiatric social worker with the department, alleged before the Chief Minister that she had been transferred unethically and removed from her designated area of work.

By Saturday evening, the Health Department had resolved the issue and ordered her restoration to her previous workplace and role.

According to sources, Chakraborty has worked with the West Bengal Health Department for the past 15 years, primarily at SSKM Hospital.

A contractual employee, she served as a counsellor and special educator at the Institute of Psychiatry.

She claimed that in February, she was transferred from SSKM Hospital to the office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), Howrah.

While she had no complaints about the work environment there, the nature of the work differed significantly from the responsibilities she had performed for the previous 15 years.

Chakraborty alleged that the transfer was linked to certain internal departmental issues and that no detailed explanation was provided.

Although she suggested senior officials were responsible, she declined to name anyone publicly.

Sources said she lodged her complaint with the Chief Minister at around 11.30 am.

Within an hour, she received a phone call from Swasthya Bhavan and the matter was resolved by evening.

Sharing her experience, Chakraborty said she had attended the grievance hearing simply to present her case and had not expected such a swift response.

“For 15 years, I have worked within the government system. We are accustomed to government files moving slowly. I never imagined that I would submit a complaint to the Chief Minister in the morning and see it resolved by the evening,” she said.

“I am surprised and I feel that the pace of government work has changed,” she added.
