Govt to Probe BGBS Expenses; CM Alleges Rs 635 Crore Paid to Event Firm
Alleging that a sum of Rs 635 crore was paid to a particular event management company for organising the BGBS, the Chief Minister announced a probe into the expenditure incurred on organising the summit.
“I found out that Rs 635 crore had been paid to a particular event management company to organise the BGBS. The previous government led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the organiser of the event,” Adhikari said while addressing a press conference organised by the BJP to mark 12 years of the BJP-led government at the Centre.
“There will be an investigation. Not only will we conduct an investigation, but we will file cases. If necessary, agencies that probe financial misappropriation will be entrusted with the matter. We will not spare anyone,” he added.
According to the allegations, the Kolkata-based advertising agency is believed to have received around Rs 635 crore over the last few years.
The amount was allegedly credited into three bank accounts linked to the agency.
Meanwhile, the erstwhile Trinamool Congress government, after coming to power in 2011, held a total of eight Bengal Global Business Summits starting from 2015.
Around 20 countries had taken part in the BGBS 2015, while in 2023 the number of participating countries went up to 40.
The state also held an industry meet under the name ‘Business Industry Conclave’ on December 18 last year, where around Rs 43,000 crore investment was pledged.
After the Chief Minister’s remarks, reports suggest that a major advertisement-related financial matter in West Bengal is under scrutiny, with allegations that a Kolkata-based agency received transactions worth around Rs 635 crore over recent years across multiple bank accounts.
Around 20 transactions are reportedly under examination as part of the probe into alleged irregularities.
The matter may also be referred to the Enforcement Directorate for further investigation into suspected money laundering links.
