Calcutta High Court Seeks Report on Treatment of Arrested Persons During Public Transit

MP, June 6, 2026, Kolkata : The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the West Bengal government to file a detailed report within three weeks on allegations that arrested persons were being paraded in public with ropes tied around their waists.

Hearing a PIL, the court stressed that while police have the authority to arrest and investigate, the dignity and rights of accused persons must be protected.

The bench questioned the necessity of such practices, especially in the absence of any clear risk of escape, and scheduled the next hearing after four weeks.
