Border Surveillance to Be Intensified in North Bengal to Curb Crime and Infiltration

Sanchita Aich Bag, MP, May 22, 2026, Siliguri : Police surveillance in North Bengal’s border-adjacent areas will be intensified to curb crime, infiltration, and cross-border illegal activities.

CCTV-based monitoring introduced during the election period will continue round the clock, while special naka checking operations will be carried out at varying locations near border regions, said K. Jayaraman, Additional Director General of Police (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP), North Bengal.

He stated that security measures are being strengthened, considering the strategic importance of Siliguri, which is surrounded by international borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

The region has long been considered sensitive due to concerns over infiltration, smuggling, human trafficking, and narcotics-related activities. He said stricter vigilance has become necessary to address such challenges.

“No infiltrators will be allowed. We have increased strict surveillance in border areas. We will also hold meetings with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on these issues and work in coordination with them,” Jayaraman said.

He added that police are also focusing on dismantling human trafficking networks operating through border regions.

Alongside anti-infiltration measures, the police have intensified their crackdown on narcotics trafficking.

“We are trying to break the entire chain of the racket. Before conducting raids, police coordinate with the respective districts where operations are to take place,” he said.

The ADG further stated that intelligence inputs have indicated the possible existence of drug manufacturing units in districts including Malda and Cooch Behar, prompting investigations and targeted operations.

Raids are underway based on intelligence and public information, while special operations may also be conducted in remote areas if required.

“Our Special Operations Groups (SOG) are conducting raids, but at times it appears that accused persons receive information beforehand, affecting operations. We will not maintain fixed naka checking points. Checking will take place at different locations and at different times,” he added.

In recent months, Siliguri Metropolitan Police and SOG have conducted several major anti-narcotics drives, leading to multiple drug recoveries and arrests.

Operations have reportedly resulted in the seizure of large quantities of brown sugar, poppy husk, and other contraband substances. On Thursday, too, one person was arrested with 310 grams of brown sugar under the Naxalbari Police Station.
