Roads, Reforms & Resolution: Raju Bista Unveils Hill Vision

Amitava Banerjee, MP, May 22, 2026, Darjeeling : Darjeeling MP Raju Bista on Thursday called for collective efforts to transform the Hills, stressing the need for improved civic infrastructure, strict action against corruption and sustainable development across the Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars.

Steps are also being worked out to ease the traffic problem of Darjeeling.

Replying to questions from media persons regarding the fate of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration and the much talked about Permanent Political Solution (PPS), Bista stated: “The GTA is non-functional. However, it is an elected body. We cannot hang a lock on the GTA, nor threaten them or chase them away, as has been the system in the past. Our government will not adhere to any illegal means.”

Regarding the PPS, Bista stated that the ball has already started rolling.

“The interlocutor will be visiting soon again. The Centre, State and other stakeholders will work out the best possible solution with a constitutional guarantee,” he assured.

Regarding the traffic issue, Bista stated: “The traffic problem in Darjeeling has assumed serious proportions. I have been interacting with the district administration, police, and taxi associations regarding this. The District Magistrate will convene a meeting in Darjeeling on Friday to work out immediate relief.”

The Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP assured that the long-awaited Lebong–Teesta alternative road will materialise soon.

“Along with a Lebong to Third Mile circular road bypassing Pandam, an alternative highway is being worked out by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd,” stated Bista.

He also announced that toll collection at the Rohini toll plaza will end from June 1.

“The Rohini road was made by Late Subash Ghising for the benefit of the public. From June 1, 2026, toll collection will be stopped at Rohini,” added the MP.

He stated that in the next few days, a meeting will be convened with the GTA, Darjeeling Municipality, BDOs and district administration.

“In the next 15 to 20 days there will be a complete ban on single-use plastic in the Hills,” stated Bista.

Bista also advocated a “zero tolerance” approach towards narcotics and drug abuse, calling on the police and administration to intensify enforcement measures.

He further appealed to elected representatives and government officials to adopt an anti-corruption policy.
