MP, May 20, 2026, Kolkata: The Bengal government has granted sanction for the prosecution of former R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in connection with alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the institution.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision in a social media post on Monday night, describing it as a “significant and positive step” in the case linked to the rape and murder of “Sister Abhaya” at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024.
Adhikari said sanction had been accorded to allow legal proceedings against Ghosh and alleged that the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee had delayed the investigation process “forcibly and unethically” for a long period.
“The law is above everyone. Truth cannot be suppressed. I want the real culprits behind Sister Abhaya’s death to be identified quickly and punished under the law,” the Chief Minister wrote on his Facebook page while sharing the order issued by the Special Secretary of the Health Department.
According to the notification, all case documents, evidence and investigation-related materials were placed before the Governor of West Bengal, who granted approval for prosecution after examining the records.
The notification stated that following an order of the Calcutta High Court on August 23, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the probe into allegations of large-scale financial irregularities in equipment procurement at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A separate probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was also initiated after materials recovered during the investigation indicated alleged financial misappropriation.
