EC warns Diamond Harbour SP; shifts out Kalighat PS OC, Addl OC
The Commission directed the district election officer and police to act immediately, restore normalcy and ensure a fear-free atmosphere for voters. Officials were asked to identify those responsible and submit a report by Sunday.
The Commission also issued a warning to Diamond Harbour Superintendent of Police Ishani Pal, holding her responsible for failing to exercise control over subordinate officers and ensure impartial policing during the election period.
Residents in Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas alleged that groups of youths on motorcycles roamed neighbourhoods late on Saturday night, issuing threats and attempting to influence voters ahead of polling on April 29.
The incidents have triggered anxiety among voters, with local sources claiming the bikers went door to door in some areas.
Meanwhile, in a late-night order on Friday, the Commission removed the officer-in-charge and the additional officer-in-charge of Kalighat police station.
Utpal Ghosh, who had been appointed by the poll body on March 29, was removed, and Goutam Das, from the Special Branch of Kolkata Police, was appointed as the new OC.
Uttam Paik has been given charge as the additional OC of the police station.
The Commission has also ordered changes at the OC level in Alipore and Ultadanga Women police stations.
