TMC alleges poll bias in Bhowanipore, files complaint against officials

MP, Apr 27, 2026, Kolkata : The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has lodged a formal complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, accusing two key officials in the Bhowanipore Assembly Constituency of partisan conduct ahead of the ongoing elections.

The complaint names Surajit Roy, WBCS (Executive) and Returning Officer of 159-Bhowanipore AC, along with Soumitra Basu, Officer-in-Charge of Bhowanipore Police Station.

The party has alleged that their actions disrupted a level playing field and violated provisions of the Representation of the People Act 1951, as well as guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India.

According to the complaint, the issue stems from an incident on April 25 during a campaign meeting of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Despite securing necessary permissions, the meeting was allegedly disrupted by rival party supporters who used loud microphones placed near the venue, drowning out Banerjee’s speech and raising slogans.

The TMC has claimed that despite being informed, the police failed to intervene or prevent the disruption.

The complaint further alleges a pattern of bias, including delays in granting permissions and preferential treatment towards opposition parties.

Calling the actions a breach of official duty, the party has demanded disciplinary proceedings against both officials, removal of the Returning Officer from his post, and immediate steps to restore a fair electoral environment in the constituency.
