EC orders withdrawal of security for ‘tainted leaders’ in Bengal

MP, Kolkata, April 4, 2026 : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the withdrawal of security cover for political leaders in West Bengal who are facing criminal charges, including those out on bail or parole, as part of its effort to maintain a level playing field ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The poll panel emphasized that state resources must not be misused for the benefit of any political party during the election period. It has also requested a detailed status report from the West Bengal Police on the implementation of its directive, including confirmation that security cover has been withdrawn within the stipulated timeline.

Sources said that even before the poll announcement, 2,185 police personnel were deployed to protect 832 TMC leaders and workers, along with 144 others including party supporters. The Commission questioned the necessity of such extensive security primarily for members of the ruling party and instructed the Director General of Police to take strict action within 2–3 days.

This move is part of the EC’s broader effort to ensure fairness, curb misuse of official resources, and prevent any undue advantage for politically exposed individuals with criminal charges.
