SC Upholds Bail for Gujarat Cardiologist in Botched Angioplasty Case
A Bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar dismissed a plea by the Gujarat government challenging the grant of regular bail by the Gujarat High Court on December 8, 2025. The court observed that since the doctor was a cardiologist, he could continue serving, but authorities could monitor his actions.
The Gujarat government had argued that this was a serious case, as two individuals had died due to unnecessary operations. However, Justice Maheshwari said after reviewing the material, "We will not interfere." The Bench also questioned the defense, asking why the doctor had performed such procedures despite the lack of need.
Dr. Vazirani had conducted angioplasty on the victims at Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad. The police had registered three FIRs on November 14, 2024, over the deaths of two victims, Nagarbhai Senma (59) and Mahesh Barot (45), following unnecessary angioplasty.
The investigation claimed that the doctor had performed the procedures to fraudulently benefit from the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme, which provides free health insurance. The police alleged that the hospital falsely claimed blockage in the patients' arteries to justify the surgeries.
