Nepal President Dissolves House; Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to Become Interim Prime Minister

KalimNews, September 12, 2025, Kathmandu : In a dramatic political turn, President Ram Chandra Paudel has dissolved Nepal’s House of Representatives and appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the country’s interim Prime Minister. Karki will be sworn in at the President’s residence at 9:00 PM (Nepal Time) / 8:45 PM (IST), four days after KP Oli resigned amid nationwide anti-corruption protests.

The President’s decision to dissolve Parliament came just before Karki’s appointment, ending a deadlock over whether the step should be taken before or after her swearing-in. According to the President’s Press Adviser Kiran Pokhrel, Karki’s Cabinet will convene immediately after the oath and formally recommend dissolution, which the President will endorse — bringing the decision into effect across Nepal from midnight.

The dissolution meets the core demand of the Gen Z protest movement, which has led nationwide demonstrations against corruption and political paralysis. A faction of the movement, We Nepali Group, announced earlier today that they were ready to accept Karki’s leadership on the condition that Parliament be dissolved.

“Dissolving Parliament remains one of our core demands. Only after that can we move ahead with other processes,” Sudan Gurung, the group’s president, told reporters.

Talks throughout the day at Shital Niwas — involving the President, the Army Chief, protest leaders, and political representatives — finally reached a compromise: Karki would assume office as interim Prime Minister, and her Cabinet’s first act would be to recommend the dissolution of the legislature.

Karki, a veteran jurist known for her uncompromising stance against corruption, is expected to lead a caretaker government tasked primarily with:

  • Preparing for fresh elections.

  • Investigating the September 8–9 protest incidents that left 51 dead nationwide.

  • Launching anti-corruption and asset probes against political leaders.

Nepal Police confirmed that of the 51 deaths during the protests, 3 were police officers, 1 was an Indian national, and 47 were Nepali citizens. Thirty-six bodies remain at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, where post-mortems are set to begin Friday.

By invoking Article 61 of the Constitution, President Paudel underscored that his actions aimed to uphold national unity and constitutional integrity.
