Police raids call centre duping Canadian citizens; 10 held

MP, 19 Jan 2025, Kolkata: The Anti Rowdy Squad (ARS) of the Kolkata Police has busted a fake call centre in Panchasayar area and arrested 10 persons on Saturday for allegedly duping Canadian citizens on the pretext of fixing slow internet connection and refunding money for some issues related buying goods from a web based shopping platform.
According to police, cops were tipped off about a call centre operating from a flat in Panchasayar area which is duping foreign citizens. After keeping an eye on the flat, on Saturday, a police team conducted a raid there.
Police found 10 persons were busy calling Canadian citizens, posing as employees of Bell Canada, the largest internet service provider of the country and online shopping platform Amazon.
The fraudsters used to tell the Canadian citizens that their computer and internet connection was affected due to some reasons. When the citizens used to ask for the solution, the callers ask them to download a remote access software through which the accused persons gained control of the victim’s device.
They then siphoned off money from their bank accounts. The accused used to pose as employees of Amazon and pretend the citizens are eligible for a refund of some purchases made earlier.
Fraudsters used to follow the same method of remote access and siphon off money. During the raid, police seized several mobile phones, laptops, routers, screenshots and other documents.
