Court to pronounce Sanjoy Roy’s sentence today; victim’s parents seek death penalty

MP, 20 Jan 2025, Kolkata: A day before the court is to pronounce the quantum of punishment for Sanjoy Roy, prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, the parents of the victim demanded ‘capital punishment’ while the convict’s mother said she would accept the punishment as her destiny. 

Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ), Sealdah, Anirban Das is scheduled to pronounce the punishment of Sanjoy Roy on Monday. Roy was convicted on Saturday for the rape and murder of a Post Graduate Trainee (PGT) doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday. 

The deceased PGT doctor’s parents reportedly said that they did not want the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the investigation of their daughter’s death. On Sunday, they mentioned that they had wanted a probe headed by a magistrate. They alleged that both the CBI and police did not investigate the case efficiently and mentioned that in future their fight for justice will continue in the court. 

Meanwhile, Roy’s mother on Sunday said that being a woman and a mother of three daughters, she feels the pain of the deceased PGT doctor’s parents. While speaking to the media about the conviction, she reportedly said that if her son is guilty, he must be punished even if it means capital punishment. 

“If the court decides to hang him to death, I don’t have any objection as his crime has been proved in the eye of the law. I will cry alone but accept it as a quirk of fate, something willed by destiny,” said Roy’s mother. 

Roy’s elder sister also said that if her brother is guilty then he must be punished. She reportedly said that Roy became addicted to liquor as he grew up. However, she said she has no idea of her brother’s associations and if he was doing anything illegal.

However, sources said Roy is mostly likely to challenge his conviction in the higher court. Meanwhile, the victim’s parents are learnt to have moved the Supreme Court seeking clarification as to whether the Calcutta High Court can hear their prayer of further probe into the case. 

Roy was arrested on August 10, 2024, a day after the PGT doctor’s body was found in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He was charged under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death) and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After the trial Roy on Saturday was held guilty by the court.
