State to transfer surplus teachers in govt schools

MP, 10 Dec 2024, Kolkata: State Education minister Bratya Basu said on Tuesday that his department will soon complete the task of rationalising the student-teacher ratio in the schools across the state paving the way for transfer of teachers from those schools where their number is surplus.
The minister’s statement assumes significance with the state government’s ‘Utsashree’ portal, meant for teacher transfer, being closed since September 2022, as per directions of court.
“We are transferring teachers as per directions of the court. Until and unless there is a court order, we are not taking up any transfer.
We have almost completed the rationalizing of the student-teacher ratio in the schools. Once it is completed, if we find a surplus teacher in any school, we will transfer him/her to the nearby school,” Basu said during the question answer session in the state assembly.
The minister further stated that 5635 vacancies are existing in the primary schools across the state. The recruitment was stalled for some years due to some legal logjam which was cleared last year.
Following this, the department in the year 2023-24 recruited 9635 primary teachers. Responding to a proposal of setting up a university in Midnapore, Basu clarified that there is no need for more varsities there.
“We have Mahatma Gandhi University at Mahishadal block in East Midnapore. Vidyasagar University is located in the same district. Moreover, we have taken up the elevation of Midnapore College into a varsity,” he added.
