Supreme Court observes RG Kar rape and murder trial likely to be over in a month’s time
MP, 11 Dec 2024, Kolkata: Following the submission of a probe progress report by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday, the Supreme Court reportedly observed that the trial of the RG Kar rape and murder case is likely to be over in a month’s time.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar heard the matter on Tuesday and noted that the trial is being conducted on a day-to-day basis from Monday to Thursday at the Special CBI Court at Sealdah. The statements of 43 witnesses have been recorded. A total of 81 witnesses are to be examined from the prosecution side.
The counsel of the victim’s parents, Vrinda Grover is learnt to have submitted that the parents are hoping the Central probe agency would file a supplementary chargesheet in the rape-murder case to implicate those allegedly involved in covering up the crime.
Further, Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta reportedly informed the court that the issue regarding financial irregularities in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was separately investigated and a chargesheet has been filed. However, sanction from Bengal for prosecution in this case is awaited since the accused persons are public servants.
The court is learnt to have asked advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the state, to take the matter up with the state government.
This apart, the Apex Court asked the National Task Force (NTF) to give its final report within 12 weeks from December 10. Additionally, the court is learnt to have directed the parties concerned to share their recommendations and suggestions with the NTF on preventing gender-based violence and developing safety protocols for doctors and medical staff at hospitals with the NTF.
Meanwhile, CJI Khanna said the case would be next heard in the week commencing March 17, 2025 but is learnt to have suggested the parties could seek an earlier hearing if the rape and murder trial of the case gets delayed.
