New Statue of Lady Justice Unveiled in Supreme Court: A Symbol of Transparency and Constitutional Authority

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 17, 2024, New Delhi :  In a significant transformation of a long-standing symbol of justice, the Supreme Court has unveiled a new statue of Lady Justice, marking a departure from traditional representations. The iconic figure now features an open blindfold and holds the Constitution in place of the sword, signaling a shift in the perception of law as not merely punitive but also rooted in constitutional equality.

The statue, installed in the judges' library of the Supreme Court, was commissioned under the directive of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Its design conveys a clear message: the law is not blind in India, nor does it solely represent punishment. Traditionally, Lady Justice has been depicted with a blindfold, symbolizing equality before the law, and a sword, representing authority and the power to enforce justice. The new representation retains the scales in her right hand, symbolizing balanced judgment, but replaces the sword with a copy of the Constitution in her left hand.

This shift is seen as part of a broader initiative to move away from colonial legacies, echoing recent changes such as the replacement of colonial-era criminal laws with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Justice Chandrachud emphasizes that India's legal system should evolve beyond its British roots, affirming that the law must see all individuals equally, irrespective of wealth, power, or social status.

Sources from the Supreme Court confirm that the statue was installed in April 2023, but its public introduction has only now garnered attention due to its profound implications. The new Lady Justice statue aims to reinforce the principle that every individual is entitled to equal treatment under the law, regardless of their background.

The absence of the traditional blindfold signifies a commitment to transparency in the judicial process, suggesting that justice involves recognizing and addressing biases rather than ignoring them. This update reflects the judiciary's ongoing dedication to fairness in an evolving society, where the Constitution serves as the cornerstone of all legal decisions.

The unveiling of this new statue is not merely a cosmetic change; it is a powerful reminder that justice in contemporary India should be aware of the realities faced by its citizens, reinforcing the belief that the legal system is a guardian of equity and constitutional rights.
