Lawyer Files Case in High Court Against Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal for Revealing 'Tilottama' Name in Defiance of Apex Court Order
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September4, 2024, Kolkata: A case has been filed in the Calcutta High Court against Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal for allegedly disobeying a Supreme Court order by revealing the name of 'Tilottama' to the media. This move has sparked controversy and increased concerns for Commissioner Goyal.
The entire nation, including West Bengal, was shaken by the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor on duty at RG Kar Hospital. The incident has led to widespread protests, with people taking to the streets to demand justice for the victim and strict punishment for the perpetrators in the RG Kar case. The protests have also amplified demands for the resignation of the Police Commissioner.
Junior doctors, who have been protesting since September 2nd, have been particularly vocal, even submitting their resignation letters to Vineet Goyal. The controversy arose when Goyal allegedly revealed the name of the victim, Tilottama, to the media, violating the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, which clearly state that disclosing the name or identity of a victim is a punishable offense.
Lawyer Amrita Pandey filed a case in the Calcutta High Court, highlighting that the Commissioner of Police mentioned the victim's name in violation of a Supreme Court order that prohibits such disclosures. She demanded the resignation of Kolkata's Police Commissioner for this breach.
The matter will be taken up by the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court on Thursday. The High Court has decided not to proceed with hearing the case at this time, as it is currently pending in the Supreme Court. The High Court has ordered a temporary wait on further proceedings.
