RAJESH SHARMA, EOI, JAIGAON APRIL 12, 2024 : BJP candidate for Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat. Raju Bista on Friday promised to revamp the Siliguri Regulated Market and bring it up to international standards.
“Today, I met and interacted with the representatives of the five major Siliguri Regulated Market Committee,” he said. “I also interacted with the farmers, fruit and vegetable vendors, drivers, small business owners and other people at the Siliguri Regulated Market.
Established in 1983, every day about 20,000 people visit and make use of the market. It is one of the largest regulated markets in eastern India and the north-east. But the Trinamool Congress government has failed to develop the market to its full potential.
Siliguri is strategically located. This market should have been developed to international standards, to attract buyers and sellers from the neighbouring countries too.
The old regulated market building is dilapidated. There is no drainage, leading to waterlogging everywhere, There is no provisions of garbage disposal, even the most basic facilities are severely lacking here,” he said.
“We will be focusing on revamping the Siliguri Regulated Market, and bringing itup to the International Standards. We will ensure cleanliness and hygiene, proper drainage system, and facilities for all who visit the market. We will work with the goal of increasing daily footfall in the market.
With vision and strategic planning, I will make this possible.”
