Manipur in Turmoil as Arrest of Five Village Volunteers Sparks Mass Protests
Don't Miss
KalimNews, Imphal, September 21: Tensions are running high in Manipur following the apprehension of five village defense volunteers, triggering widespread demonstrations, especially within the Meitei Community. Mass protests have erupted across valley regions, with a significant presence of women leading charges at local police stations, passionately demanding the release of the detained individuals or their arrest.
At approximately 1:30 PM, a large crowd of demonstrators gathered near the Singjamei Police Station in the Imphal West district. They chanted slogans like "Arrest us if you are going to detain our fellow village defense volunteers!" Their approach was met with a barricade formed by the Manipur Police and Rapid Action Force, situated roughly 500 meters from the police station.
The standoff quickly escalated, resulting in clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Angry shouts filled the air, expressing grievances against the perceived bias of the Manipur government. Protesters criticized the government's alleged tendency to enforce laws more strictly in the valley while seemingly allowing Kuki militants greater freedom in the hill regions.
The situation reached a breaking point when security forces deployed tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. Amid the ensuing chaos, one demonstrator, identified as Laishram Sanajaoba from Kakwa, Imphal West, was briefly detained. Sanajaoba voiced the public's frustration over the government's failure to resolve the ongoing five-month conflict, emphasizing the perceived valley-hill bias. He asserted, "We are not afraid to sacrifice for the sake of our future generations. Despite being unarmed, we are prepared to fight with all our strength."
The arrests of the five village defense volunteers on September 16 triggered a chain reaction. In protest against the police action, a 48-hour shutdown was declared, demanding their immediate release. With no positive response from the government, intensified demonstrations, coordinated by Meira Paibi and valley clubs, took to the streets.
These events have raised critical questions regarding the impartiality and competence of the Manipur Police during an already volatile period. The arrests, coupled with reports of armed Kuki militants operating openly in areas like Churachandpur, have fueled allegations of bias against the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles. The central question echoing in both valleys and hills is whether law enforcement agencies are truly impartial in their approach to the diverse communities of Manipur.
As public faith in the administration wanes and violence persists, the Manipur government faces the daunting task of restoring peace and trust among its citizens. The safety of its people, the preservation of harmony between communities, and transparent governance remain paramount as Manipur navigates these turbulent waters.
