Drug peddlers warned not to venture into Panitanki

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, PANITANKI (Indo – Nepal Border). FEBRUARY 24, 2022: Darjeeling Police on Thursday warned drug peddlers active along Indo-Nepal border in Panitanki not to venture in the area again.
The youths in the area have been seen on several occasions taking drugs openly in public places. They have admitted that they buy the drugs from local peddlers. After the news came in limelight on social media the police and local administration are determined to eliminate the trend.
On Wednesday an anti-drug rally and awareness programme was initiated by Darjeeling Police at Panitanki along Indo-Nepal border under Khoribari block. Students, social workers, civic volunteers, police personnel from Naxalbari and Khoribari police stations marched in the anti-drug rally along with District Magistrate of Darjeeling DM Poonnambalam, Superintendent of Police Santosh Nimbalkar and other police officers.
Addressing a gathering Poonnambalam said: "Our aim is to make Panitanki free from drugs and Darjeeling free from drugs. The awareness programme was held with the same motive today. The initiative started under SP Darjeeling will only be successful if local people support our effort."
Nimbalkar said: "This type of awareness is very much needed. After my arrival I noticed that the reputation of some places are getting spoiled due to drug abuse. Police have been actively dealing against the peddlers. Since the last one year more than 80 drug rackets have been unearthed.”
