SNS, SILIGURI, 9 OCTOBER 21 : Amid a marked rise in the number of Covid-19 cases again, the protocol that was supposed to be strictly in place has gone up for a toss, while the state health & family welfare department has warned that the pandemic is still active and that mutation of the virus may lead to a further surge in cases.
The department has issued the Durga Puja advisory for the common people and puja committees to be followed as they celebrate the state's biggest festival that has already begun.
"The possibility of the projected third wave of Covid-19 is still not over. Therefore, being alert is always important for everyone. It is important to restrain certain things during the celebrations of the festival. The pandemic is still raging and due to mutation of the virus, there could be a spurt anytime," the advisory says.
The health department has discouraged big gatherings.
"In view of the festival, there should not be gatherings and processions. It would be proper to celebrate the festival with family members," it has said.
The advisory also underscores the need to avoid crowds, maintain proper distance in shops, and markets or restaurants. It advises people to avoid vermilion game in groups, and keeping elderly persons, children, pregnant women and sick persons away from gatherings.
The department has also warned people not to step out without masks, and advised washing of the hands frequently with either soap or sanitiser. It has further said that people suffering from cough, cold and fever should not venture out.
While urging people to adopt responsible behaviour when it comes to following the Covid appropriate behavior, public health specialists fear there could be a spike in cases after the festivities if is slackness in following the advisory.
For puja organisers, the advisory stresses on regulated entry of people and proper monitorin g of volunteers to ensure proper implementation of the Covid protocol.
"There should be an adequate number of basins for washing hands and arrangements for hand sanitisation. Visitors should not he allowed to stay inside the marquees for a long time, and arrangements of proper air circulation should be in place," the advisory says.
It adds that physical distance should be ensured while offering 'anjali' and puja, while there should be markings for each person to stand on.
