"Yaas" Very Severe Cyclonic Storm likely to move north-northwestwards to reach and cross near north Odisha coast
PR (IMD), KalimNews, Kalimpong, 26 May 21 : The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm `Yaas' over northwest & Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 12 kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centred at 0230 hrs 1ST of 26th May, 2021 over northwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 20.4°N and longitude 87.6°E, about 85 km east-southeast of Dhamra, 90 km east of Paradip (Odisha), 140 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha), 130 km south of Digha (West Bengal).
It is very likely to move north-northwestwards to reach near north Odisha coast close to Dhamra port by the early morning of Wednesday, the 26th May. It is very likely to cross north Odisha close to north of Dhamra and south of Balasore, during noon of 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting 70 kmph is prevailing over North Bay of Bengal and along and off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha–West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts. It would gradually increase and further becoming 80-90 kmph gusting to 110 kmph over Jhargram & West Medinipur, 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph over South 24 Parganas, 70-80 gusting to 90 kmph over North 24 Parganas, 65-75 gusting to 85 kmph over Kolkata, 60-80 gusting to 90 kmph over Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia, East & West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia; 50-60 gusting to 70 kmph over Birbhum and Murshidabad districts from early hours of 26th.
Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph likely over Purulia, Bankua, Jhargram & West Medinipur districts; 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph over East & West Burdwan, Birbhum and East Medinipur on 27th.
Sea Condition (Red Warning):
Sea condition is High to Very High over Westcentral and adjoining eastcentral & north Bay of Bengal. It is very likely to become Very High to Phenomenal over northern parts of central Bay of Bengal, north Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha–West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts till 26th May evening.
(iv) Fishermen Warning (Red Warning) The fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea till further information.
(v) Port Warning: Keep hoisted D-6 At Hoogly, Haldia, Kolkata port along with sectional Signal number I at Sagar Island port.

Tidal waves of height 2-4 meters above astronomical tide are likely to inundate low lying coastal areas of East Medinipur district around the time of landfall.
Storm Surge Warning (Orange Warning):
Tidal waves of height about 2 meters above astronomical tide are likely to inundate low lying low laying areas of South 24 Parganas District around the time of landfall.
Damage Expected for coastal and adjoining interior districts.
❖ Total destruction of thatched houses/ extensive damage to kutcha houses. Some damage to pucca houses.
❖ Potential threat from flying objects.
❖ Bending/ uprooting of power and communication poles.
❖ Major damage to Kutcha and and Pucca roads.
• Flooding of escape routes.
❖ Disruption of railways, overhead power lines and signalling systems.
❖ Widespread damage to standing crops, plantations, orchards, falling of green coconuts and tearing of palm fronds.
❖ Blowing down of bushy trees like mango.
❖ Small boats, country crafts may get detached from moorings.
• Visibility severely affected
Action Suggested for coastal and adjoining interior districts:
> Suspension of fishing operation and movement of ships in disturbed areas.
> Ports along the east coast of India may take necessary pre-cautions.
> Naval base operations may maintain necessary pre-cautions
> Tourism activities may be restricted over these areas.
> Mobilise evacuation from coastal areas.
> Judicious regulation of rail and road traffic.
> People in affected areas to remain indoors.
> Preparatory action before the cyclones
> Total suspension of ferry service from the night of 25-05-2021 to the night of 26-05-2021 at East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts.
