10 militants arrested in valley districts of Manipur


PTI, IMPHAL, APRIL 27, 2025 : Security forces arrested 10 militants belonging to different proscribed outfits from Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur, police said on Sunday. Four cadres of the banned United National Liberation Front (Pambei) and an associate were apprehended from Wangkhei Thangapat Mapan in Imphal East on Saturday, they said.

The arrested militants were "involved in extortion activities in the Imphal Valley and intimidation of locals," a police officer said. A member of the proscribed PREPAK (Pro) was held from Lamphelpat in Imphal West, while five active cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) were arrested from different parts of Imphal East on Saturday, he said.

Meanwhile, arms and ammunition, including guns, rifles, and grenades, were recovered during search operations at Moltincham village in Kakching district on Saturday, police said.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence in Manipur over the last two years. The Centre had imposed President's rule in Manipur on February 13, days after the then chief minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post, leading to political uncertainty in the northeastern state.

The Manipur assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Agencies: Manipur Police records the arrests stating that on one occasion, four cadres of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei) and one associate were arrested from Wangkhei Thangapat Mapan, Imphal East, near Young Pioneer Club under Porompat Police Station, Imphal East District. The arrested cadres are: Wangmayum Azizur Rahamna @ Tiger (52) of Mayang Imphal Bengoon Yangbi Mayai Leikai, Imphal West, a/p Hatta Golapati KR Lane, Imphal East; Sheikh Wasim Raja @ Wangthoiba (30) of Kiyamgei Muslim Mayai Leikai, Imphal East; Md. Faruk Khan @ Kengba (19) of Phabakchao Konuma, Imphal West; Phusham Ajmir @ Kakpa (24) of Mayang Imphal Bengoon Yangbi Makha Leikai, Imphal West.

The arrested individuals were allegedly involved in extortion activities in the Imphal Valley and intimidation of locals, according to police sources.

On another occasion, one active cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested from Kekrupat near Mangal Hospital under Imphal-PS, Imphal West District: Longjam Tony Singh (37) of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai, Imphal West District.

In a separate incident, two active members of the outfit KCP (Noyon) were arrested from Sawombung Gate near the Forest office under Lamlai-PS, Imphal East District: Shagolshem Lemba Meitei (43) of Loushangkhong Makha Leikai, Imphal East District; Shagolshem Romen Meitei (40) of Loushangkhong Makha Leikai, Imphal East District.

Additionally, one active member of KCP (PWG) was arrested from Sawombung Junction near FCI Godown under Lamlai-PS, Imphal East District: Laishram Suraj Singh (28).

Finally, three active members of KCP (PWG) were arrested from Liwa Road under Singjamei-PS, Imphal West District: Md. Maneruddin (48) of Lilong Haoreibi Lou Manga, Thoubal District.; Md. Wajbir Ahamed @ Jimi (33) of Lilong Sambrukhong, Thoubal District; Thongam Joynanda Singh @ Boicha (51) of Khongnangpheidekpi Aheibam Leikai, Imphal West District.
