SNS, SILIGURI, 17 NOVEMBER 2020 : An immunohematology and blood transfusion medicine department is coming up at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).

Minister of state for health and family welfare Chandrima Bhattacharya today announced in Siliguri that a department related to blood will be opened at the NBMCH, along with the Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (PGME&R) and SSKM hospital, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital and Institute of Blood Transfusion Medicine & Immunohaematology (Central Blood Bank) at Manicktala Kolkata.

According to doctors at the NBMCH, Ms Bhattacharya meant the immunohaematology and blood transfusion medicine wing as a new department. The Director of the NBMCH Regional Blood Transfusion Centre, Dr Mridumay Das, said such a department was the need of the hour.

'There are many patients in the region who are suffering from thalassemia, haemophilia, and different types of leukemia and many patients travel to Mumbai and Kolkata for treatment, but following the introduction of the department, they can be treated here," Dr Das said.

While attending a blood donation camp organised by the Siliguri Town Trinamul Congress Committee, Ms Bhattacharya handed over a fully equipped vehicle to collect blood from voluntary donors and popularise voluntary blood donation.

Ms Bhattacharya said a similar van had been given to the Cooch Behar Medical College and hospital.

The mobile Van is fitted with three beds and blood collection and storage facilities, besides a public address system. According to Dr Das, the vehicle will visit for blood collection in any area in the Plains.

On the other hand, the NBMCH is set to mark its 53rd Foundation Day tomorrow. NBMCH Patient Welfare Committee chairman Dr Rudranath Bhattacharya said the up-gradation of the biochemistry department will be undertaken.
