KalimNews, Kalimpong, 25 May 2020: Day 62- After the first confirmed positive case was reported on January 30 in Kerala, the epidemic has expanded its footprints in the country, affecting more than 1.25 lakh people.
The country is under lockdown since 25th March and it has been extended till 31st May 2020 in four phases. Today is the eighth day of the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Both the spread of the virus and the spurt in cases in recent days will be a cause for concern for the authorities.
This week India is facing an alarming rise in new cases every day and it has registered the highest single day spike today on May 25 (6,977 cases). Consecutively it is increasing as follows: May 24 (6,767 cases), May 23 (6,654 cases), May 22 (6,088 cases), May 20 (5,611 cases), May 21 (5,609) and May 18 (5,242 cases) in the last seven days.

The record rise of 6,977 cases today was once again led by Maharashtra, which reported 3141 (yesterday- 2,608) new cases in the last 24 hours. The jump in cases, officials have pointed out, also corresponds to a rise in testing as 1 lakh samples have been tested daily for five days in a row now. Over the last two months, India has increased its testing capacity from 1,000 tests per day in March to one lakh tests daily tests.
