Cyber-crime police station opens in Kalimpong

SNS, Kalimpong, 1 June 2019: In order to handle cyber crimes more efficiently, the Kalimpong police inaugurated the cyber-crime police station at IT Park, Tashi Dim, in 11th Mile, today. Manoj Verma, the Inspector General of Police inaugurated the cyber unit. Mr Verma had earlier also inaugurated the women's police station in August 2018.
"With diverse choices in social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram and even WhatsApp, along with the easy internet access, information technology (IT) oriented crimes have drastically increased even in a small town like Kalimpong since 2010-2012,"said a cyber¬crime expert.
"It is a great move by the District Police. It comes after around ten months of the establishment of women's police station and these are all great developments from the administration's end."
said Prabal Rai, a student of Kalimpong College.
The Superintendent of Police. Dhurva Jyoti De, said that there are many cases where IT act sections get violated and it is good to have a special police station to handle them. "This unit will basically investigate the cases where the IT act sections are applicable," said Mr De.
Asked if the frequent net-work fluctuation and communication disturbance in Kalimpong will result in an interruption in the functioning of the cyber cell, Mr De said that it would not have much impact on the unit.
Meanwhile, a conference hall, opposite to the town hall, was also inaugurated today.
