Tamang hopes BJP will create Gorkhaland
VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, Darjeeling: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Binay Tamang on Sunday tried to turn the tables on the BJP and its allies, saying he was hopeful that the saffron party would create Gorkhaland in five years.
Tamang was addressing the media for the first time after the May 23 Darjeeling Lok Sabha and Assembly byelection results, both of which went in favour of the BJP.
The BJP and its allies, GNLF and the Morcha's Bimal Gurung faction, had already asked the Tamang camp to quit the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.
After a central committee meeting of the Morcha in Darjeeling, Tamang broached the Gorkhaland issue. "Since 2009, people voted the BJP for Gorkhaland. I am hopeful that they will now create Gorkhaland in the next five years. They are talking about `permanent political solution'. I hope the `permanent solution' they are talking about is GorkhalandAn observer has said Tamang is facing the heat after the twin defeats and he seems to be attempting to turn the tables on the BJP by bringing up the Gorkhaland issue.
Asked about the rival parties' demand to quit the GTA because of absence of mandate, Tamang said: "For the mandate, elections must be held to the GTA. We are ready to face GTA and panchayat polls. They (GNLF) had also administered the DGHC without elections in the pastTamang had said during the election campaign that he would quit politics even if his party lost even one election.
"I had indeed said it. But at this moment, I think I need to work on 31 issues I raised. I will solve the issues in 23 months and after that, I will see what needs to be done," said Tamang.
Ajoy Edwards, a GNLF leader, said: "We are not surprised that he has gone back on his statement to quit politics.".
