5 Dead... Sikkim crash kills 5 Bengal tourists

RAJEEV RAVIDAS, TT, 30 Apr 2019, Gangtok: Five tourists from Hooghly district in Bengal, all members of the same family, died and nine persons, including two local residents, were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a gorge while returning to Gangtok from Tsomgo (Changu) Lake at 7 Mile on Sunday night.

Police sources said the accident occurred when the driver lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a bend in thick fog. The vehicle with eight passengers fell into a 400ft gorge, killing four of them on the spot.

The fifth passenger died on the way to the hospital. The four injured persons, including a minor and the driver, have been admitted to hospitals here.

The dead have been identified as Snehasish Bose of Hooghly, his wife Kakoli, their son Subhajit, daughter Soma and son-in-law Sandeep Kar. The injured are their daughter-in-law Mohua, grandson Surjyas, driver Suraj Tamang and an unidentified local woman.

Kar is from Shyam Bazar in north Calcutta.

"The bodies are being kept at the mortuary of the New Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Multi-Speciality Hospital (in Gangtok) pending postmortem. All the four injured are out of danger and are undergoing treatment at two different hospitals in Gangtok," said a police source.

The accident occurred on NH10 around 7.15pm on Sunday. The accident spot is 10km from Gangtok The police have registered a case of negligent driving against the driver.

The family of tourists had arrived in Gangtok on Wednesday on a holiday. They had visited different tourist spots in the state during the course of their stay, and had set out to visit Tsomgo Lake and Nathu-la on Sunday.

"They were supposed to leave for Darjeeling via Namchi today (Monday)," said an employee of the hotel where they were staying in. A police source said there were three other tourists in the share taxi, but they aborted the journey midway on the way to Tsomgo after their vehicle was caught in a traffic jam. "An army vehicle had got stuck on the road to Tsomgo because of which traffic had come to a standstill for a long period of time. The three other occupants of the vehicle decided to abort their trip to Tsomgo and return to Gangtok because they had to catch a train from NJP later in the evening," said the source.

As fate would have it, the family from Shyam Bazar, however, insisted on visiting Tsomgo despite the long delay.
"We have informed the family members of the deceased about the incident. The father of Sandeep reached Gangtok late this evening. We have been told that they will be taking possession of the bodies tomorrow (Tuesday)," said a police source, adding that the bodies would be taken to Calcutta by road tomorrow.
