Cancer awareness

TT, Gangtok, Dec. 9: Two students of Sikkim University have put up a painting exhibition to raise awareness on cervical and breast cancers and also to celebrate the spirit of womanhood and women empowerment.
The two-day exhibition organised by Shobolini Bhattarcharya and Chutim Namgyal Bhutia was inaugurated by the vice-chancellor of the University, T.B. Subba, here today.
Both Bhattarcharya and Bhutia, are MA second-year students of sociology department and have put up a total of 25 distinctive paintings out of which 20 are abstract paintings and five pencil sketches.
"My paintings portray pain which a woman goes through be it a physical assault in the form of domestic violence or rape. Cervical and breast cancers are mostly common in women. Through this exhibition we also want to raise awareness on these crucial issues" said Bhattarcharya.
The cost of each painting was Rs 2,000 and we will donate the money generated by the sale to an NGO that creates awareness on cancers said the girl who hails from Kasba in south Calcutta.
