TMC grabs Jalpaiguri Sadar Panchayat Samiti
SNS | Jalpaiguri | 05 November, 2016: The Trinamool Congress on Friday grabbed the Jalpaiguri Sadar Panchayat Samiti, the only Panchayat Samiti that was still under the control of the Left among the seven in Jalpaiguri district.
Krishna Ray Barman, who was elected on a CPI-M ticket, was elected as the new sabhapati of the Sadar Panchayat Samiti, after she joined the Trinamool Congress.
“There was an election for the post of sabhapati of Sadar Panchayet Samiti at its office on Friday. Twenty-six Panchayat Samiti members were present for the election. Krishna Ray Barman was elected as the new Chairman of the Panchayat Samiti. I gave her the certificate as there was no other candidate,” said Tapasi Saha, Block Development Officer of Jalpaiguri Sadar block.
Notably, Jalpaiguri Sadar Panchayat Samiti has 41 seats. Trinamool Congress had bagged only four in the last rural polls held in 2013. Congress had secured four seats whereas Left Front had won 33 seats to form the Sadar Panchayat Samiti Board.
Recently four members from the Congress and 18 from the Left Front joined the Trinamool Congress. With the 22 new members, the TMC obtained the majority, which it proved during the sabhapati election on Friday.
At present Trinamool Congress has 26 members out of the total 41. "Our member Krishna Ray Barman was elected as the new Sabhapati of Sadar Panchayet Samiti in Jalpaiguri district. The decision to field her for the post has been taken as per our party district president Sourav Chakraborty's instruction. Developmental work will be taken up in full swing now" said Dulal Debnath, of the TMC Jalpaiguri district committee.
