
Kirati Khambus of North East will take part in Khambu Rights Movement in New Delhi...Khambus ST status demand gathers momentum across the country
KalimNews, 17th Nov 2014, Guwahati Assam : Khambu Rights Movement in aegis of Kirati Khambu Rai Sanskritik Sansthan (KKRSS) and several Kirati Khambu organisation of the country is staging a 3 days sit in demonstration displaying rich tradition and culture of Khambus at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 27th, 28th and 29th November 2014 in support of Scheduled Tribe status of Kirati Khambus of the country. The Khambus of North East India too have been invited to participate in the said democratic program in the national capital.
‘We have received formal invitation to participate at a 3 days agitation in New Delhi for Scheduled Tribe status demand of Kirati Khambus of the country – the Kirati Khambus of North East India under the banner of NORTH EAST KIRATI KHAMBU RAI SANSKRITIK SANSTHAN (NEKKRSS) will send its representatives to New Delhi to express solidarity and extend full support to the ‘ Khambu Rights Movement’ demanding ST status spearheaded by the Kirati Khambu Rai Sanskritik Sanstahn (KKRSS)’, said Nanda Kirati Dewan Chief Co-ordinator and Convenor of NEKKRSS in a press release issued from Guwahati.
The Khambu Rais or Rais are one of the most ancient indigenous ethnolinguistic groups of the Indian State of Sikkim and Darjeeling Hills and along the north eastern States of Assam. Late Professor Suniti Kumar Chatterji (linguist and kiratologist, Calcutta University) states, Kirats migrated from the east via north Burma and Assam along the mid-hills (lower mountains) with their pigs in ancient times.
The history of existence of Kirat in India dates back to 600 AD that includes Yakthumba (Limbu), Khambu (Rai), Dhimal and Sunuwar etc says historians and have been practising tribal culture since then like the Bodos, Karbis, Misings, Rabhas and other STs of the region.
As such thousands of Khambus of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Terai and Dooars of West Bengal and states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya , Maniupur , Sikkim , Bihar, Uttarakhand and rest of India is expected to assimilate at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to press its demand of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of Khambus both in the state and central list and send memorandum to Union Tribal Affairs Minister and Registrar General of India through proper channel via a sit in demonstration in New Delhi with copy to Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi. Khambu dominated Darjeeling MP Shri. S S Alwahlia and Sikkim MP Shri. P D Rai are invited to participate and address the Khambus on 28th Nov 2014.
