Hooch den ire

TT, Jalpaiguri, Nov. 2: The discovery of a schoolgirl’s body at her home today sparked a ransack and demolition of hooch shops near Jalpaiguri town, though police have not spoken of a link between the death and the liquor dens near the child’s home.
Some residents ransacked 10 hooch dens, alleging that some “miscreants” who visited the hooch dens had entered the girl’s home, tried to rape her and then killed her fearing that they would be identified.
No police complaint has been lodged yet. The post-mortem report is yet to come, before which the police have declined to speak on the death.
The girl’s parents were away at a relative’s place, she was at home with her five-year-old brother, who alerted neighbours this morning that the girl was not responding to his calls and seemed to be asleep.
“There was no reason for the girl to die in such a strange manner. We suspect some of the miscreants who gather in these hooch dens raped her or tried to rape her and then murdered her out of the fear of getting identified,” said Sushil Kumar Mallick, a resident of the area, which is about 15km from Jalpaiguri town.
