Pangolin smuggling case: All 7 convicted

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, Siliguri, 29 Sep 2014: The seven persons accused last year for smuggling pangolin scales and seahorses were today convicted by the Siliguri court. Baikunthapur division DFO Damodardeo Rai said three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 each were handed out to the offenders who were caught smuggling 70kg of pangolin scales and 6kg of seahorses. 
All were in custody since July 31, 2013. The seven include Bhachand Dhabi from Haryana, M Udhaya Kumar from Chennai, Amrit K Rana from Nagaland, Jac Rangrang from Manipur, Shyam Bihari Mahato from Siliguri and Ganesh Ghimiray and Dakchaya Birbahadur Rai from Nepal. 
Bhachand Dhabi had brought the scales from Haryana for smuggling to Nepal through the Siliguri corridor, while Ghimiray and Rai had come to Siliguri to escort the group to Nepal.
