Gorkha Sanskritik Mela from Jan 9 in Salbari

EOI, Siliguri, 6 January 2014: The Gorkha Sanja Pariwar of Siliguri is set to hold a five-day long ‘Gorkha Sanskritik Mela’ in Salbari from January 9. The fair is aimed at highlighting the identity crisis faced by the Gorkha community and will essay at promoting its culture and traditions.
Nabin Mukhia, cultural secretary of the organising committee, said various cultural troupes from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Assam and Sikkim will perform at the mela. He said various traditional attire, food items, daily-use materials and other traditional items of the Gorkhas will be showcased across various stalls at the fair.
Mukhia also said upcoming local fashion designer Alka Adhikari has agreed to organise a Nepali fashion show on the inaugural day. She will exhibit her latest Nepali-Indian fusion collections, he added.
Dancers Somya Rai and Om Chhetri from popular TV show ‘DID Little Masters’, Indian Idol finalist Kapil Thapa, Manipuri film singer Sarita Gajmer, Nepali rock bank Mantra and a number of other artistes will perform during the mela, informed Mukhia further.
Renowned Nepali literary figures, singers, sports persons, poets and social workers will also be felicitated for their work, according to the cultural secretary.
