Woman refuses test after rape

TT, Alipurduar, Dec. 13: The 32-year-old woman who had allegedly been tortured and raped by a gang of men in Falakata yesterday refused to undergo a medical examination and was discharged from the hospital today.

The woman didn’t give any reason for not undergoing the medical test. One man was arrested today in connection with the rape and police are looking for six others.

The woman, the wife of a Trinamul gram panchayat member, was raped at her father’s house. She also alleged that the men had first beaten up her mother and then threw out her two-year-old daughter. They tied her in a room, yanked off her earrings which damaged her ears, and tore off clumps of her hair before raping her.

The victim was taken to the Falakata hospital for the test by the police yesterday.

Suman Rudra, the block medical officer of health, Falakata, said: “The patient did not give the necessary permission for the medical examination. The doctor on duty said she was in a stable condition and released her from hospital.”

The woman left the hospital with her mother and two-year-old daughter. When journalists approached her, she refused to talk.

“Please don’t follow me. I am so tired and I have nothing to tell you,” she told the media persons.

The woman placed one of her hands on the mother’s shoulder and left the hospital covering her face with her sari.

Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said Ganesh Sarkar had been arrested and produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court here today.

“He was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. The woman has named seven persons in her complaint and we are searching for the other six,” said the ASP.

People of the village where the woman was raped refused to talk about the incident today. Even leaders of different political parties were unwilling to discuss the incident.
