Hill unit of TMC raises questions on supply of drinking water

SNS, Kurseong, 8 December 2013: The Hill unit of Trinamul Congress raised questions regarding the supply of drinking water in and around Kurseong town areas. As per its Kurseong unit leadership, the people have been drinking contaminated water due to the alleged negligence of the authorities concerned. 

Talking to reporters, the TMC Kurseong unit, senior leader, Mr Mohan Tamang said the people have been drinking dirty water at several wards of the Kurseong municipality and such a situation has emerged due to the negligence of the concerned departments. 

He further added that the problem have not ended here but following the indifferent attitude of the department officials, several natural water catchments have been stopped for supplying water in Kurseong. 

Mr Tamang alleged that reconstruction work of a water reservoir situated at Durbin Dara was started around six months ago at the cost of several lakhs of rupees but surprisingly even after a long period, its construction is yet to be completed. 

He said: "However, the reservoir is still under reconstruction but even though at several wards of the municipality the water supplied has been from the same reservoir, which is totally unhealthy. As the reservoir is open and reconstruction is going around it, the water of the tanks have been polluted. Sometimes, even monkeys have been seen playing in and polluting the water of the reservoir and later the same water without filtration is being supplied at different areas." 

He also claimed that not only the reservoir under reconstruction, instead, another reservoir situated on its side is also in a dilapidated condition. "Most of the windows of the tank are already in a broken state and destroyed; hence, one can corrupt and pollute the water any time, which may prove fatal for the people who have been consuming the reservoir's water," he said. 

As per Mr Tamang, presently the water is being supplied to the Kurseong people from one or two water catchment areas. The authorities concerned have failed to manage the previous and other new water catchments as well as checking of the leakage properly. The concerned authorities should immediately take proper steps to manage the water supply systems in Kurseong region on different aspects.
