Confusion over students’ union election at Kurseong College
SNS, Kurseong, 27 November 2013: The authorities and the students of Kurseong College are a confused lot regarding the date of the college students’ union election.
Such a situation has reportedly emerged, after the announcement made by a senior TMC leader Mr Binny Sharma during a press conference in Darjeeling on Monday that the TMC will give their candidates for the 13 December scheduled Kurseong college students’ union election.
The Kurseong college principal, Dr Prabhat Pradhan, said: “For the past two days, we are really confused regarding the date of the college student union election.” He further added that yesterday some daily newspapers, quoting a senior TMC leader, reported that Kurseong College election will be held on 13 December which is not true, in which it is said that they would even place their candidates.
Mr Pradhan further said: "However, when we contacted the concerned authorities of the North Bengal University to confirm the development and date of election, we learnt that so far no any date has been fixed for any Hill colleges' election by them. Hence, we have not been able to clarify on the subject as after the media reports, not only the students but even some staff of the college have been frequently asking and querying about the reported date of the election.” As per Mr Pradhan and other staff of the college, recently, the state government had issued a notification on a website that all the colleges of the state should complete their respective colleges’ election before 31 January 2014 and that the date of the election will be fixed by the concerned university of the respective colleges. As per the new instruction of the government, all the colleges of each district should convene the election at the same time and same date in their particular district.
Hence, the date published in the newspaper has not only confused the Kurseong College authorities; instead it may also have confused all the colleges of the Darjeeling district.
Mr Pradhan added: “The Kurseong college winter vacation starts from 16 December onwards and hence to meet the government order we have already written to NBU to immediately convene the union election but so far, no date has been finalised by them.”
Hence, all these development revealed that the election matter which had already been a subject of concern has now further brought an additional headache to the authorities of Kurseong College.
