
Strike called in Darjeeling
KalimNews, Kalimpong, 28 September 2013: 12 hr strike is called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in protest against a molestation of a school girl by a RAF jawan.
Tension gripped Darjeeling after the students demonstrated protesting the attempt to rape.
It was reported that a student of a girls high school of Ghoom was molested and attempted of rape by a Rapid Action Force posted in Ghoom while she was returning home.
The Class XI Girl aged 16 is in a trauma and was hospitalised in Darjeeling.
Following the incident local students demonstrated and protested in Darjeeling town. Darjeeling Police along with CRPF and RAF tried to clear the road blocked by the students which was followed by Lathi Charge. It is alleged that students in retaliation pelted stones to the Police force and the police fired tear gases to disperse the students. It is also alleged that police fired 3 round blank fires to disperse the crowd. Many students are injured in the incident. Darjeeling town was deserted after the police raids in some areas of the town.
GTA member Jyoti Kumar Rai is arrested by police.
People observed spontaneous strike in Darjeeling and followed by Kurseong from the afternoon when students and locals demonstrated in the Darjeeling police station.
Still tension is prevailing in the Darjeeling town area.
Police has arrested the RAF Jawan Arun Pramanik and has started investigation of the case.
Later in the evening GJM called 12 hr strike in the 3 sub division hill areas of Darjeeling.
