Support groups for Gorkhaland demand

KalimNews, Agencies, Darjeeling Times.com, Kalimpong, 29 August 2013: Fueled by the announcement of creation of a separate state of Telangana, new phase of Gorkhaland movement was announced by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and gathered fresh momentum.
In the year 2007 Gorkha Janmukti Morcha restarted the agitation in the Darjeeling hills demanding the creation of a separate state out of West Bengal.
The demand once started by Gorkha national Liberation Front in 1986 but dropped after the formation of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in 1998 during a tripartite meeting was rekindled with dethroning of GNLF Chief Subhas Ghising from DGHC in 2008.
Since the GTA pact was signed two years ago on July 18, 2011 between the GJM, the state and central governments for setting up the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), an autonomous body and GJM was running it.
But from 29th July 2013 GJM restarted the next phase of the Gorkhaland agitation with an announcement of 72 hrs bundh. The bundh is being continued with a series of programmes and some in between relaxations for a few days (1st &  2nd and 15th to 18th August).
It is almost a month over since the strike continued but so far no effort for negotiation is made between the agitators and the government.
But several unexpected changes in political strategies, programmes of the agitators and action and reaction of the government were significant during this phase of the agitation. Total closure of all offices and educational, business institutions and traffic movement, resignation of Bimal Gurung from the post of Chief Executive of GTA, formation of Joint Action Committee, observance of public curfew, order of the high court banning the curfew and bandh, students and youths participation and demonstration, arrest of more than 800 GJM activists including 12 elected public representatives- GTA members were observed during these days.
Several organisation have supported and are supporting the movement and the agitation of Gorkhas in the Darjeeling hills.
Students and teachers of Jadavpur University, human right activists of North Bengal and others have shown their solidarity to the demand and the cause of the Gorkhas.
NGOs of North Bengal submitted a memorandum to the Bengal CM to stop the police atrocities and to redress the grievances of Gorkhas.
In Jadavpur University, students organised a musical rally supporting the demand of Gorkhaland and an interactive programme with the professors and others.
Support groups has also been formed in some places outside Darjeeling.
In Delhi a meeting held in support of Gorkhaland, that included Gorkhaland supporters studying in 3 universities, 4 media groups and people working in numerous private and public sectors, other social bodies and individuals convened to stand up and act.
The meeting resolved to move ahead with the Gorkhaland demand with or without any support from the politicians, reports Darjeeling Times.
The report published in darjeelingtimes.com states that it was agreed that Gorkhaland is the only aspiration of the people and that the Gorkhaland movement will go on with or without the support of any politician or political party, including Bimal Gurung.
Parallel meetings on strategising for the formation of Gorkhaland are expected to be held at Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore and other cities in coming days. A Resolution signed by the people will reach GJAC, State, Centre and the leader of largest political party in the Darjeeling region – Mr. Bimal Gurung, demanding for GTA to be immediately scrapped.
