Teachers, staff seek restoration of 2016 SSC recruitment panel

MP, Kolkata, August 8, 2026: Teachers and non-teaching employees who lost their jobs following the cancellation of the 2016 School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment process on Friday marched from Sealdah to Dharmatala before blocking Dorina Crossing, demanding reinstatement of eligible teachers and staff.

The protesters blocked the crossing for nearly an hour before moving to the police-designated protest site after police intervention.

“We want the Chief Minister to meet us and give a written assurance of talks. If the government agrees to talks and reinstates eligible candidates, we will withdraw our agitation. Otherwise, we will continue our protest,” protest leader Suman Biswas said.

One protester dressed as a prisoner to symbolise what the demonstrators described as their “captivity” after losing their jobs following the Supreme Court’s cancellation of the appointments.

The protesters argued that candidates found ineligible had already been identified and excluded and that eligible candidates should not continue to suffer because of irregularities in the recruitment process.

They demanded restoration of the 2016 recruitment panel through repanelling based on the OMR sheets.

Referring to assurances made by Suvendu Adhikari when he was the Leader of the Opposition, the protesters said they expected the Chief Minister to fulfil his promise to restore the jobs of eligible candidates and warned that the agitation would continue until the government responded to their demands.
