Amit Shah, Harsh Vardhan Shringla discuss Darjeeling development and Gorkha issues

Amitava Banerjee, MP, Darjeeling, August 8, 2026:Union Home minister Amit Shah, during a meeting with Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla, acknowledged the contribution of the Gorkha community to the nation and said it deserves due recognition.

A press note issued by Shringla’s office stated that the two leaders also discussed the development priorities of Darjeeling and the region’s future growth.

Their discussions covered infrastructure, connectivity and issues relating to the overall development of the hill region.

Shah is expected to visit Darjeeling in the near future.

The proposed visit is being viewed as a significant political and developmental outreach to the Darjeeling Hills.

He is also expected to initiate discussions on a Permanent Political Solution (PPS) to the long-standing Gorkha issue.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes amid renewed focus on the Darjeeling Hills and the Centre’s engagement with the region on matters relating to development and public welfare.

Meanwhile, the Naya Party Nirman Samiti (NPNS) has appealed to Gorkhaland supporters to participate in large numbers in the Gorkhaland Sankalp Rally, scheduled to be held in Darjeeling on Sunday.

Addressing the media, NPNS leader Pradeep Lohagun said: “With the highly fluid political situation in the Hills, Gorkhaland no longer appears to be on the agenda. Months have passed since the BJP came to power, yet no dialogue has been initiated on either Gorkhaland or a political solution.”

Lohagun said the rally aims to strengthen public support for the demand for a separate state and mark the beginning of a new phase of the movement.

He added that the party would continue its intellectual and democratic campaign until the demand for Gorkhaland is fulfilled.

“Empty assurances alone will no longer work. It is time to shake them,” Lohagun added.

In another development, three GTA Sabhasads, Kalpana Pradhan, Nilesh Rai and Kalpana Pradhan joined BJP from BGPM.
